The latest work from the Besitzarbeiten refers to the series Pier and Ocean (1915) by Piet Mondrian, marking an important stage in his development towards abstraction. Each picture of the series consists of a flattened oval containing a composition of vertical and horizontal lines representing the stars in the sky and their reflections in the ocean. The recurring figure of a pier jutting into the water calms and stabilizes each image. The installation at the P.S.1 makes reference formally and also in terms of content to these works: between the museum and the artist’s Berlin apartment lies the ocean, across which a ship brought furnishings from his home which were used as material for the installation.
